Standing in the company cafeteria, Curtis Kroeker was mulling his options. Sizzling steak? Or maybe the organic mesclun mix with poached pears, candied pecans, blue cheese and caramelized fennel relish, tossed with sherry vinaigrette?
Not your average lunchroom dilemma. But then, this is the cafe of Internet auction powerhouse eBay, which like a number of other Silicon Valley companies, has beefed up dining options in a meeting of high-tech and haute cuisine.
"A big part of eBay's philosophy is the importance of a work-life balance and really encouraging people to take the time to sit down and to know their colleagues better, build those relationships that are so important to succeeding professionally," says eBay spokeswoman Kim Rubey. "A great benefit of the cafe is convenience, but more than that, we also want to offer a culinary experience."
Goodbye, mystery meat and macaroni. Hello, herb-crusted pork tenderloin — a tasty trend that has taken hold in Silicon Valley and beyond in the past decade.
