Chamber of Commerce departures continue over climate change stance

PNM Resources, a New Mexico utility holding company, is withdrawing from the United States Chamber of Commerce due to disagreements with the group’s climate stance, the company said on Thursday.

The announcement comes less than a week after a similar move by Pacific Gas & Electric, a major California utility, which also cited climate differences when announcing its withdrawal from the Chamber on Tuesday.

The chamber supports reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in principle, but rejects any approach that it believes would drive up the price of energy and send American jobs overseas.

It has been sharply critical of President Obama’s efforts to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. Recently the chamber threatened litigation if the Environmental Protection Agency does not re-examine its findings on the effects of climate change on the public.
