Your reaction to the debate?

by TM

ABC News has received thousands of responses to Charles Gibson's and George Stephanopoulos's moderation of tonight's Democratic debate in PA.

I thought it was the worst moderation ever, "gotcha" questions rather than real policy issues. Elizabeth Drew in the latest New York Review of Books (posted earlier) called it "molehill politics" — the concerted effort to make every molehill into a mountain.

Most of those writing in expressed similar views, which you can see here.

Here is a sample:
"Our country is engaged in unlawful war, our military is breaking, our economy faces severe recession, our moral standing in the world has collapsed, our currency has lost nearly half its value, our infrastructure is disintegrating, our citizens cannot afford to stay in their homes though Wall Street moguls make billions of dollars annually, our current adminsitration condones and encourages torture - and lies to us about their actions, our borders cannot be adequatley policed for unlawful entry, our school sytems are so underfunded as to be barely above 'third-world' standards, our major auto manufacturers refuse to create vehicles that achieve even half the mpg of European manufactures, our minimum wage is slightly above poverty levels, our health care system operates to benefit the pharmaceutical industry, our veterans are ignored; their physical and emotional suffering trivialized, our energy conglomerates purposely stand in the way of advancing alternative energy, our citizens believe elections have been manipulated and stolen - and that our government has manufactured terror to maintain the facade of protecting us, our constitutional rights and responsibilities have been abridged and decimated, our access to meaningful 'news' is stymied by corporate media interests, our government spies on us by unlawful means under the guise of protecting our freedoms, our military commanders present disparate assessments of our 'success' in the middle east, our citizenry argues about gay marriage and flag burning while congress postures about life-saving possibilities of stem cell research, our airwaves are filled with hate speech spewing from commentators more interested in shocking us than being truthful..... and you waste our time at this most crucial period in US history asking a man as intelligent and insightful as Senator Obama why he doesn't wear a flag pin on his lapel? This? This is the best we can do to elect a president?"

Every “debate” has had there share of stupid questions from FOX’s “24” torture scenario and evolution to MSNBC’s Russert asking about their favorite Bible verse, so I have been accustomed to it. Disappointed yes, but accustomed.

Sadly, the moderators are being self-serving … asking the questions that the talking-heads discuss. Sean Hannity has been all over the Obama Weatherman story, so it was good the Obama had a chance to address it … but the “voters” that listen to Hannity have already decided not to vote for a Democrat (the choice will be between McCain and Barr), so this raised the profile of the question for others to hear about it for the first time. I look at it as good practice … just like an exhibition game. Obama got an opportunity to expound on it …. But the questions about Wright seemed to be a rerun. In both instances, it shows me that Obama has been exposed to anger and alternative views … this is a good thing … we don’t need another President who lives in a bubble and couldn’t even identify foreign leaders before being selected.

The problem is that two Democrats are attacking each other … in a sibling fight, you don’t want anyone to get hurt, but that’s what their doing. Obama’s “cookie” comment was unnecessary … it brought him down to Clinton’s level. (If you heard the Democrat District 3 debate, it was similar between Bonoff and Madia.)

I was most impressed with Obama’s citing of the NYT story (listed below on VoxVerax) concerning the income gap and the monies made by hedgefunds.
Gibson’s follow-up on Capital Gains tax rates was not adequately deflected by Obama.
Clinton shone best on Social Security … yet her answer was simplistic. Gibson scored points attacking Obama that raising the tax level on SS would be a tax increase on the middle class … Obama’s correct to suggest it, but Gibson’s response will cause fear in middle class voters.
Obama’s best point was that the Commander-in-Chief determines the mission and the military implements it … he was also solid on his Iran approach.

Scoring the fight … no knockdowns … no TKO … but a verdict for Obama.

The letter cited below addresses the real policy issues that need to be asked.
