Four of the past five weekends have found Gov. Tim Pawlenty using his spare time to stump for presidential candidate John McCain, and this weekend is no exception. Pawlenty is to be featured at venues across Florida, where the Republican race is exceptionally tight.
With McCain pulling even against chief rival Mitt Romney in some Florida polls, Pawlenty was brought in Friday afternoon to do what he has done in Iowa, New Hampshire and Michigan -- use his energy and gubernatorial presence to help tip the balance.
"It's a remarkable comeback for someone who was written off for dead just a few months ago," Pawlenty said in a telephone interview from Tampa on Friday. "Through the merits of his character and sheer persistence, he has clawed his way back."
Stoking the vice presidential rumor mill with every appearance, Pawlenty continues to say that he is not seeking that position and that he and McCain have not broached the subject.
Nevertheless, on Friday Pawlenty was positioned near McCain at a homeland security panel discussion in Tampa, flanked by top former military brass, backed by a giant American flag and looking very much like a key member of McCain's team.
