What was missing was the Israel connection.
Kristol, Safire, Perle, Wolfowitz, Woolsey, Libby, Feith, Krauthammer, etc, are all part of the U.S. branch of the Likud, supporting Israeli colonialism on the West Bank and placing the defense of Israel above U.S. interests.
Their code is "spread democracy in the Middle East" (except when groups like Hamas win fair elections) which they have used to support knocking over the governments of Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, and maybe Saudi Arabia.
Whose interests does that serve?
It was because they believed that Saddam had secreted his nuclear weapons program underground that they agitated for an invasion of Iraq. It's because of Iran's putative nuclear program that they are clamoring for an invasion of Iran.
Oh, yeah...anyone who criticizes them is anti-Semitic, the first defense of the Israel-first crowd."

Saddam claimed LOADS OF TIMES during the 1st Gulf War to possess a secret weapon. I remember this just from watching normal TV news. Then they make a huge song and dance bc nobody can find the "weapons of mass destruction" when they come in looking ...
