Words from 46 years ago for our leaders of today
We pray that peoples of all faiths, all races, all nations, may have their great human needs satisfied; that those now denied opportunity shall come to enjoy it to the full; that all who yearn for freedom may experience its spiritual blessings; that those who have freedom will understand, also, its heavy responsibilities; that all who are insensitive to the needs of others will learn charity; that the scourges of poverty, disease and ignorance will be made to disappear from the earth, and that, in the goodness of time, all peoples will come to live together in a peace guaranteed by the binding force of mutual respect and love.

Ike had the wisdom of experience and he is often cited today for that pre-JFK inaugural speech when he warned of the dangers of "undue influence" exerted by the "military-industrial complex.". William Hartung penned an interesting commentary in the World Policy Journal looking at the Congressional actions regarding the "military-industrial complex". Since it was written pre-9/11, it is an interesting reminder of Bush’s vow not to undertake "vague, aimless, and endless deployments." Also, considering the lack of resources that our military has today, the wisdom of investing in the various weapon systems and Pentagon sacred cows should be carefully debated in Congress … yet the Congressional leaders cited in Hartung’s piece are still in power today, making cutting of those programs still remote.
