If we require kids to tell the truth, why not the President?

George W. Bush's rise to power has been an exercise in obfuscation. From his time in the Texas National Guard to today he has remained a Man of Mystery, alleging or pretending one thing where in reality the truth is something different altogether.

Were he a petty criminal or simply a small-town businessman, well, no big deal. Unfortunately, he holds a position which instantly makes him the most powerful man in the world. Little white lies or hidden truths in Midland, Texas, may be business-as-usual, but magnified on a worldwide basis these lies lead to much greater consequences, like thousands of injuries and deaths and billions of dollars, perhaps trillions, mismanaged.

What would we think of an individual like this running a country like Russia or Britain or Germany or France? How would we view him?

Ragging on "W" is getting so old, so tiresome. It's such a waste of energy and time. I yearn to say something positive about the man who occupies the White House. Yet each week, sometimes each day, reveals yet another example of how this man has led this great country into a tarpit of war and debt, and how his actions have tarnished this great nation's credibility.

And here's yet another example....

The slow-motion trap

His presidency was built on secrecy and, we now know, on lies. The more Bush struggles to free himself, the more his past deceptions bind him.

By Sidney Blumenthal

Apr. 13, 2006 | President Bush has been in search of himself for two and a half years. His voyage of self-discovery began on Sept. 30, 2003. Asked what he knew about senior White House officials anonymously leaking the identity of covert CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson, he expressed his earnest desire to help special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald ferret out the perpetrators. "I want to know the truth," he said. "If anybody has got any information inside our administration or outside our administration, it would be helpful if they came forward with the information so we can find out whether or not these allegations are true and get on about the business."
