Public financing for federal elections

Is it possible? Public financing for federal elections? Aw, go on!

Says Republican Sen. George Voinovich, "Too much of our time is spent raising money, time spent campaigning, time buying TV ads. When everyone's out there trying to raise money, dialing for dollars... until we deal with this issue you're going to continue to have problems."

Yeah, after all that fundraising and campaigning and meeting with lobbyists, how does any legislator expect to do the job he or she is elected to do?

Public financing of elections is, in fact, the only way we are ever going to clean up the corruption in Congress. And perhaps with publicly funded elections we will finally have campaigns based on the discussion of issues rather than on who has the most money to sling mud at his opponent.
