Happy New Year from Vox Verax

The good news as we enter 2015 … with a few caveats:
  • Pope Francis is in the Vatican
  • The U.S. involvement in the war in Afghanistan is officially over … we'll see how long that lasts
  • The U.S. economy today is better than it was at the beginning of 2014
  • The job future looks much brighter for college grads … if not necessarily for other segments of society
  • Obamacare is working … although it's far from the answer we need if we want universal health coverage in the U.S.
  • China and the U.S. have agreed that we need to get serious about limiting the transference of greenhouse gases from the land to the atmosphere and oceans
  • In the U.S. gas is cheap again … but this will inhibit achieving the necessary conversion from fossil fuels to other sources of energy (see above)
  • Progress has been made in protecting the oceans from overharvesting and worldwide fisheries from collapse … but much more still needs to be done
  • Cuba and the U.S. are going to be friends again
  • Undocumented residents in the U.S. can breathe a sigh of relief, at least for a while
  • In Washington it's the Republicans' turn to try try to steer the mega-giant supertanker called the S.S. United States … but they may have to get serious about really trying to govern for the benefit of all segments of society (not likely)
The challenges we face as we enter 2015:
  • ISIS, Syria, Israel-Palestine, Russia, China, Iran
  • Ebola, malaria, AIDs
  • The growing inequality between the haves and have-nots
  • The personhood of corporations
  • Money in politics
  • Money in politics
  • Money in politics
  • Worldwide 2014 was the warmest year on record … and that trend is likely to continue
  • In Washington it's the Republicans' turn to try try to steer the mega-giant supertanker called the S.S. United States
And yes, Vox Verax is still (mostly) on hiatus.
