Republicans Place the Wrong Bet

Charles, M. Blow, NYT
MARCH 5, 2014

Republicans may have bet too heavily on the wrong issue going into the midterm elections.

When the health care law’s website wasn’t working, the law itself was at its most unpopular and its most newsworthy, and the president’s poll numbers were cratering, many Republicans made the calculation that they could ride the wave of woe to an overwhelming electoral victory in November.

But betting on stasis is stupid. Things change.

The White House called in the geek squad, and they fixed the site. Last week, the White House also announced that four million people have now enrolled in the health care program. The president’s poll numbers have stabilized, albeit in negative territory. The news winds shifted. And Democrats have found an issue that they can campaign on and that America likes — helping the working class through things like raising the minimum wage.

Did you read the Time article ?

IMO, the Democrats in Minnesota are facing a real problem. Two polls have come out indicating that Dayton and Franken have leads (not overwhelmingly but substantial) ... no candidate for MN-03 (Paulsen) and the DCCC has announced their Top Targets for 2013 which did not include any Minnesota districts indicating to me that Kline is being given another pass.
Thus, MN Democrats, in an off-year election, face an apathy problem.

If you read the Time article, think about the MN Democrats who appear to be confronting the election just as HHS approached the ObamaCare website --- "Happily, there is still an eternity until November."
The problems were not confronted on Obamacare, and any opportunities to change the House appears to be losing steam.

The Republicans may have placed the wrong bet, but it may not hurt them.
