When it comes to the human body, microbes trump man. As many as 100 trillion bacteriadwell inside the gut, outnumbering our own cells by a sweeping 10 to 1 margin. Thus, it's no surprise that these microscopic inhabitants leave a mark. Gut bacteria have been tied to ailments like obesity and inflammatory bowel disease.
What is surprising, however, is that microbes' influence may extend to other regions of the body as well, including the heart and brain. Conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and evendepression could be swayed by the presence of the little blighters. And last week, researchers at New York University added a new ailment to that list: rheumatoid arthritis.
