More preschoolers than cops die annually from gun violence

Looking for Lessons in Newtown

By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF, NYT

After my column a few days ago urging tighter gun control, I faced incoming salvos from firearm enthusiasts. Let me respond to some of their arguments:

Don’t politicize the tragedy in Connecticut. This is a time for mourning, not for demonizing gun-owners.

Oh, come on! The president and Congress are supposed to address national problems — and every two months, we lose more Americans to gun violence than we did in the 9/11 attacks, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A study by the Children’s Defense Fund found that we lose some 2,800 children and teenagers to guns annually.

That’s more than the number of American troops who have died in any year in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. More than twice as many preschoolers die annually from gun violence in America as law enforcement officers are killed in the line of duty.

So,... it is OK for the President to tie his request for higher taxes to hurricane Sandy and the Newtown Massacre? One must wonder – is there anything, anything at all that does not mean we need to pay more taxes to those on the left side of the aisle? Our government has been overspending for decades, the decent thing to do would to let the hurricane Sandy and the Newtown massacre victims heal a bit before using them as political fodder.

Apparently disarming around the most vulnerable among us hasn't worked. Time to have armed guards at the entrance to every school.

I'll quit my job in a heartbeat to be an armed school security guard, and I wouldn't demand to join a union either. If I were to be an armed guard at a school and anyone threatened to harm the children I was protecting would be met with deadly force....and I'm a pretty good shot up to 50 yards with my 9mm Smith & Wesson.
