Pujols Deal Makes G.M. Jaws Drop

The news that Albert Pujols had agreed to sign with the Los Angeles Angels broke just as the Rule 5 draft got underway this morning at the winter meetings in Dallas. And it sent shockwaves through the hotel ballroom where a few hundred baseball executives and reporters were gathered.

In what had appeared to be a two-team contest between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Miami Marlins, the Angels were the mystery team that actually turned out to be real. But what really raised eyebrows around the room were the reported terms of the deal: 10 years and between $250 million and $260 million, according to Yahoo.

“Wow,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. “That’s all. Wow.”

In Pujols, the Angels have landed one of the greatest sluggers in baseball history, a future Hall of Famer. But given the length and size of the deal, it’s reasonable to wonder just how much value they will get out of it – and how much that value will decline as Pujols ages.
