‘Oops’ Moment Takes On a Life of Its Own

ROCHESTER, Mich. — I knew our CNBC presidential debate had broken through when my daughter called from college to shout: “Dad, you’re on my two favorite Web sites!”

She was talking about CollegeHumor.com and PerezHilton.com, two among the scores of outlets that replayed my exchange with Gov. Rick Perry of Texas that ended with “Oops.” It continued through “Saturday Night Live,” with Fred Armisen and Nasim Pedrad playing me and my moderating partner, Maria Bartiromo.

We hardly anticipated slapstick to result from our visit to “Tension City,” the PBS anchor Jim Lehrer’s term for the experience of moderating presidential debates. Discussions of taxes, deficits and Federal Reserve interest rate policy rarely end that way.

We definitely didn’t expect a moment that would ripple across the Internet as one of the biggest debating calamities ever to befall a presidential contender.
