What it sells, buys, or makes is a mystery. It has no known shareholders, nor does it have a chief executive.
One thing that is known about W Spann LLC: In late April, it gave $1 million to Restore Our Future, a so-called Super PAC founded by allies of the Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, according to the group’s most recent filings with the Federal Election Commission.
That was six weeks after the company was registered by a Boston lawyer who does estate planning for the wealthy, according to a report Thursday by NBC. Ms. Casey and her firm declined to comment to NBC on the nature of the corporation or who was behind it.
The contribution has raised the hackles of advocates for stricter campaign regulations, who say it could potentially raise legal issues if W Spann, as a limited liability corporation, was formed specifically for the purpose of shielding an individual donor who wished to remain anonymous.
