Two Democratic state senators in Wisconsin withstood recall elections Tuesday night, the last in a series of recalls that Democrats launched as political retribution for a Republican-backed effort to scale back labor rights.
State Sens. Jim Holperin and Robert Wirch both defeated Republican challengers. Holperin held off Kim Samac in a northern Wisconsin district — a race that Republicans had seen closing in recent days, but that Holperin eventually won by a healthy margin. With almost 80 percent of precincts reporting, Holperin led Samac by 8 points, 54 percent to 46 percent.
Wirch easily beat GOP challenger Jonathan Steitz, 57 percent to 43 percent, to keep his Milwaukee-area district.
“We need to get back to work,” Holperin told POLITICO after his victory speech. “I had to put some stuff aside in order to conduct these recalls, as did many of my colleagues. So a lot of us are just looking forward to getting back to work. We’ve got a lot of issues to deal with in the Legislature.”
