Goliath v. David: Plastic bag manufacturers sue small reusable bag maker

The Bag Monster, a.k.a. ChicoBag founder Andy Keller

(LP NOTE: This is taken from a website put up by ChicoBag, which makes and sells reusable shopping bags — truly a terrorist endeavor. While Vox Verax usually only posts news stories and op-ed pieces, we thought this was worth posting because it's not been reported in the national press. We were alerted by a story in the print edition of the San Francisco Chronicle. Once that story goes to the web, we'll post it as well.)

Three of the largest Plastic Bag Manufactures are suing ChicoBag, a reusable bag company for “irreparably harming” their business.... They point to ChicoBag’s Learn The Facts Page, which provides sourced and widely accepted information regarding the environmental impacts of single-use bags. Ironically, the lawsuit does not mention the Bag Monster, a viral character created by ChicoBag founder Andy Keller, representing the annual consumption of the average American, and probably what actually put ChicoBag on the plastic industry’s radar. Interestingly, the same plaintiffs — Hilex Poly Company, LLC, Superbag Operating, LTD, and Advance Polybag, Inc. — also sued the City of Oakland over their single-use plastic bag reduction ordinance. In addition, a number of lawsuits have been filed by the Save the Plastic Bag Coalition, whose membership includes at least one of the companies involved in the ChicoBag lawsuit – Hilex Poly. We at ChicoBag think the plot is really thick and fascinating – read our PRESS RELEASE and company founder’s recent blog post "History of the Plastic Bag”.
