Presidential Primary Book Club

Newt! Newt! Newt!

The former speaker of the House is officially a presidential candidate! He broke the news on Twitter, which directed you to a video, which showed Gingrich making what was possibly the least compelling public announcement since LeBron James told the world he was ditching his hometown team because “I wanted to do what was best for LeBron James and make him happy.”

But about Newt. You know what this means. As a public service, I have been attempting to read all the books written by Republican presidential candidates so you will not have to. Today we take on the Gingrich oeuvre.

Which is huge. Twenty-four books! This guy is the Barbara Cartland of politics.

The two overriding themes of these tomes are patriotism and a desperate need to fill up pages. Gingrich has clearly set himself production quotas and the books are almost all co-authored — he had two co-writers even for “Quotations from Speaker Newt.” Many also have guest contributors. “To Save America,” his recent campaign book, which was written “with” Joe DeSantis, has chapters that are co-written by helpful experts. The chapter on “Solving the Education Crisis” has three co-authors, even though it is only seven pages long.
