Sacred Cows, Angry Birds

By GAIL COLLINS

The House of Representatives has been cutting like crazy! Down with Planned Parenthood and PBS! We can’t afford to worry about mercury contamination! Safety nets are too expensive!

But keep your hands off the Defense Department’s budget to sponsor Nascar racers.

“It’s a great public/private partnership,” said Representative Rodney Frelinghuysen, a New Jersey Republican.

The Defense Department claims racecar sponsorships are an important recruiting tool for the Army. The House agreed — although this might be news to the Navy and Marines, which decided a while back that a Nascar presence wasn’t worth the money.

Let's see ... Michele Bachmann, Paul Ryan, Ron Paul, Joe Barton, James Sensenbrenner, Dave Camp, Dave Dreier ... that should be a group of Republicans that many would say have a strong voice in House legislative actions ... they all voted with FOR Congresswoman McCollum's amendment.
From the Dems, you have Nancy Pelosi, John Conyers, Elijah Cummings, Slaughter, Jackie Speier, Markey, Dennis Kuchinich, Janice Schakowsky ... once again the people that are regularly quoted in the media as to what is good for the country ... and once again they voted FOR McCollum's amendment.

Sadly, though Congresswoman McCollum's other amendments never got to be considered ... (she also wanted to cut the Military Bands) ... in the end, the House Republicans just said, we're done .. it's time to take another week off.

Bad deal.

No government funding of Planned Parenthood and PBS is a small step in the right direction. Continued funding for Nascar vi DEpt of Defense - a step in the wrong direction. I hope voters make those who protected the NASCAR expense pay the next time they are up for election.
