Green skeletons lurk in GOP closets

It may be heresy to conservatives, but a trip down memory lane shows nearly all of the top-tier Republican presidential contenders want to save the planet from global warming.

On the campaign stump, in books, speeches and nationally-televised commercials, aspiring GOP White House candidates such as Tim Pawlenty, Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney have warned in recent years about the threats from climate change and pledged to limit greenhouse gases. Some have even committed the ultimate sin, endorsing the controversial cap-and-trade concept that was eventually branded “cap and tax.”

Now, as they prepare for a wide-open primary season, many of the Republicans are searching for ways to explain themselves to a conservative voting base full of hungry tea party activists and climate skeptics who don't take kindly to environmental issues so closely linked with Al Gore.

"They're in an odd place," Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, told POLITICO. "They better have an explanation, an excuse or a mea culpa for why this won't happen again."

Hmmm … does the Right Hand at Politico know what the Left Hand at Politico is
reporting : Mitt Romney had a major fundraiser event in the Hamptons yesterday at the home of mega-businessman David Koch and his wife, I'm told by several sources.

Would David Koch of Koch Industries and founding moneyman for Americans for Prosperity and the TaxEnoughAlready movement be having a meet-and-greet for someone they could not control ?

Second, what does Bob Parry of SwiftBoatVeterans and Americans for Honesty on Issues think about climate change … he may not tell you but he will tell Tim Pawlenty next time Pawlenty is called to pick up a bagful of money.

So, who is the loser here … Mike Huckabee … Parry has previously spent $200,000 to run ads against Huckabee.

Climate change will be an issue that Republicans will address in some fancy wordmanship … like Bush’s “Clean Skies” … probably giving tax breaks to companies for investment in facilities which they may have done anyway.

This probably won’t be a big issue within the Republican primary (unless someone like John “DM&E Coal Train” Thune makes a run and wants to poke Romney or Pawlenty … however it will continue to be a big issue to use against Democrats … IMO, the Dems lost the midterms in June 2009 when the House approved “Cap and Tax” … that brought out the TEA Party forks against Mike Castle and the other RINOs that voted for it … from then on every Republican ran ads touting how much the Democrats were going to raise every taxes $1700 to $3000 … fact or fiction (really fiction) but it works … people are easily duped by fearmongers
