American priorities: The importance of shopping!

Overheard at the mall

A huge winter blizzard dumped a foot or more of blowing snow on the Mankato, Minn., area on Saturday. Yet Minnesotans are a determined lot ... especially when it comes to shopping.

A friend of ours was traipsing the toy department at Target in the midst of the event, and ... well ... we'll let him tell the story:
I swear that I actually heard the following with my own ears. I was in the Mankato Target during the storm yesterday, just about an hour before it would have been impossible to get home at all.... Anyway, while I was browsing in the toy section, two coeds walked by, one of whom was talking on her cell phone. As she passed by, I then heard her remark, in all seriousness: "They're closing the roads! Can you believe it? DON'T THEY KNOW THAT PEOPLE HAVE RISKED THEIR LIVES TO GET TO THE MALL?"
Who says some folks don't have priorities?

(Hats off to "Scooters" and the Mankato Free Press.)

I don't look at it as a matter of priorities, but rather the woman on the phone is simply as dumb as lamp post. Only someone completely void of any intelligence could come up with such a response...

My, how this have changed from my college days … go to the mall … nah … go to MGM liquors to stock up during a snowstorm … Yes.

Actually, thinking about it … I recall when I first moved to Mankato and storms wouldn’t stop me from going to work … one time, I got a call from one of the clerical workers … a young single gal in her 20s telling me that she could not make it in that day … I replied “fine … see you tomorrow” …. later another employee arrived and I acknowledged his commitment to the company and told him that his fellow worker would not be coming in today … at which point he gave me a look … I asked what was wrong … he said that while he was shoveling out his driveway, he saw her drive by and he thought she would beat him to work … until he drove by Park Lane Liquors a few minutes later only to see her walking out carrying a 12-pack …
The next day, I talked to her about work responsibilities … that we do not want anyone to take needless risks but that we have a job to do … she turned out to be one of my best employees.
