FRESNO -- In a dramatic, fiery exchange, candidate for governor Meg Whitman on Saturday accused opponent Jerry Brown of being behind the scandal over her former undocumented housekeeper -- an allegation that pushed Brown to say that if Whitman won't take responsibility for her actions, then she isn't fit to be governor.
The second of four debates, held at Fresno State and televised on Univision before potentially millions of Latino viewers, came at a time when Whitman is under heavy scrutiny for her treatment of Nicandra Diaz Santillan, a Union City woman she fired in June 2009 after the housekeeper worked for nine years at the candidate's Atherton home.
"You should be ashamed for sacrificing Nicky Diaz on the altar of your political ambitions," Whitman said.
But Brown fired back: "Don't run for governor if you can't stand up on your own two feet and say, 'Hey I made a mistake.' "
