Sen. Blanche Lincoln besieged on all sides

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. –Utah Republican Bob Bennett, one of two Senate incumbents already felled by his own party this year, faced an insurgency on the right. Party-switching Pennsylvania Democrat Arlen Specter was taken down by a rebellion on the left.

Sen. Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, who might be the next incumbent senator ousted in this tumultuous political year, is getting pounded from all sides.

Former President Bill Clinton, who knows something about taking punches from opposite ends of the political spectrum, unintentionally summed up Lincoln’s problem at a rally meant to jump-start her candidacy here Friday afternoon.

Referring to the labor unions that are bombarding the two-term Democratic senator on Arkansas airwaves, Clinton said: “They’re saying she’s not pure enough and trying to make her a poster child and Republicans say she supported the president too much.”
