The Wizard With a Bad Plan

In our search for comity and common ground this year, perhaps we can all agree that professional athletes should try to reduce the use of firearms to resolve personal disputes in 2010.

You may have heard that the Washington Wizards are engulfed in a crisis over Gilbert Arenas, one of the team’s star players. His fight with a teammate over a gambling debt led to a display of handguns in the Wizards locker room.

Seldom have we seen so many words that do not belong in the same sentence. Perhaps not since Plaxico Burress of the New York Giants managed to string together pistol, nightclub, “tucked in his sweatpants waistband” and “went off.”

We’ll get back to Arenas in a minute. Actually, he was only up there in the beginning because in these distracted times you do need a good celebrity connection if you want to make a serious policy point.
