Here's to inaugurating a new season of hope with Obama

Dear President Obama,

We welcome you today as our 44th President. It seems to me you are coming into the game at the right time.

I feel it's appropriate that I write this in the sports pages because we use so many sport metaphors in relation to big news events - especially politics.

When our astronauts went to the moon and back, we called it a "round-tripper." And, when Pope Benedict appeared at Yankee Stadium last year before a packed house, we labeled second base "our hearts," and said, "The pontiff stole second."

The word "change" was your calling card during the presidential race, and by coincidence, we now have a new pitcher coming to the mound who promises to be a "change-up artist." This is good because this kind of pitcher offers a variety of pitches and is usually reputed to have "lots on the ball."
