Judges refuse Coleman ballot inspection request

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The judges in the Minnesota Senate contest are denying a request from Republican Norm Coleman to send teams of inspectors around the state to re-inspect ballots in some precincts.

Coleman’s lawyers had identified 86 precincts where they allege irregularities occurred that may have inflated Democrat Al Franken’s current 225-vote lead in the race. Coleman has sued to overturn that lead.

The judges wrote that Coleman did not meet the burden of proving that the inspections are necessary in order to prepare for trial.

The trial is to start Monday. Franken’s attorneys had argued there wasn’t time to deploy inspectors around the state before then.
