Candidates, Fly Away Home

By GAIL COLLINS

The lifespan of a ladybug is four to six weeks.

I am bringing this up because we have just embarked on a presidential race between Barack Obama and John McCain that will continue for almost five more months. The next time you see a ladybug, remember that by the time the returns come in, its great-great-grandchildren will be old enough to date.

Five months. The youngest bee buzzing around your garden isn’t going to be around long enough to find out who wins. Neither are any of the world’s current generation of coral reef pygmy gobies, although it probably doesn’t bother the fish. If you want to get a pygmy goby really depressed, start talking about the life expectancy of coral reefs.

To summarize, five months is a long time.

The primaries were different. They went on forever, but they were almost always absorbing. For a long time, you had a crowded field and that helped a lot. Watching the Fred Thompson candidacy alone was worth the price of admission — sort of like a version of “Waiting for Godot” in which Godot actually shows up and turns out to be a mailman who enjoys recounting the plots of “Law & Order” episodes in great detail.
