Judiciary Committee wants Rove testimony

from The Politico

House Democrats Thursday demanded the appearance of Karl Rove before the House Judiciary Committee in an ongoing investigation into alleged selective and politically motivated prosecutions.

The request comes in the wake of a "60 Minutes" investigation into the jailing of former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman. A Judiciary Committee report accuses the Justice Department of failing to cooperate in the investigation but still finds “troublesome facts” surrounding Siegelman's prosecution and imprisonment. Siegelman was recently released pending an appeal.

“Several witnesses have corroborated testimony before two Judiciary subcommittees that the investigation against Gov. Siegelman was ‘coming to a close’ without charges until Washington officials directed local prosecutors to go back over the matter from top to bottom, and that decisions regarding the Siegelman case were being made at the very highest levels of the administration,” the report says. “That testimony in turn corroborates the sworn statements of a Republican attorney that the son of the Republican governor of Alabama told her that Karl Rove had pressed the Department to bring charges.”

The committee also urged the Justice Department's Office of the Inspector General and Office of Professional Responsibility to investigate the allegations. It also demanded that Attorney General Michael Mukasey provide additional documents on the subject.

“The actions we are taking today, including calling Karl Rove to testify, are an effort to get to the bottom of this matter,” Conyers said.
