The Face of a Prophet

By LOUISE STORY
New York Times

George Soros will not go quietly.

At the age of 77, Mr. Soros, one the world’s most successful investors and richest men, leapt out of retirement last summer to safeguard his fortune and legacy. Alarmed by the unfolding crisis in the financial markets, he once again began trading for his giant hedge fund — and won big while so many others lost.

Mr. Soros has always been a controversial figure. But he is becoming more so with a new, dire forecast for the world economy. Last week he rushed out a book, his 10th, warning that the financial pain has only just begun.

“I consider this the biggest financial crisis of my lifetime,” Mr. Soros said during an interview Monday in his office overlooking Central Park. A “superbubble” that has been swelling for a quarter of a century is finally bursting, he said.

Mr. Soros, whose daring, controversial trades came to symbolize global capitalism in the 1990s, is now busy promoting his book, “The New Paradigm for Financial Markets,” which goes on sale next month.

Who else has this guy made wealthy? Answer - no one. Has he ever used his money to start a public company, brought a product to market, invested in research and development, enabled a teacher retirement fund or union pension fund to invest in Soros' wealth? No, no, no and no.

Soros is a greedy capitalist who gets a free pass from the liberals because he contributes to their causes. He is not beholden to anyone but himself, he has no board of directors to answer to, no shareholders, no customers, no one. Oh sure, he heads a financial investment corporation, but that is a private company whose purpose is to place his financial bets and is the vehicle he uses to procure his wealth. There isn't a single person on this planet who gets a penny from George Soros' financial investing - except George Soros.

But, because he contributes to liberal causes, he's called a 'Prophet'. nice.

Patrick: You missed the line where it says that Soros has given away $5 billion thru his various foundations.

While I was assigned to Eastern Europe, Soros was the single largest contributor to democracy programs -- $500 million, larger than any gov't.

Giving away billions to political organizations whose purposes can be very loosely considered to be 'promoting democracy' is hardly prophetic. Most of the organizations to whom he has given money are nefarious groups formed to promote his agenda under the guise of 'democracy building' and 'promoting civil societies', yet his organizations do the bare legal minimum in disclosing their activities. Sort of runs counter to his advocacy of 'open society' rhetoric.

Soros is a cancer and he uses his wealth to advance his own agenda - most of it below board. In any other context, what people call his philanthropy is clearly political activism. His money would be much more well served in funding alternative energy research or some truly philanthropic endeavor, but he'd rather promote political activism that enables governments to grow and liberty to yield.
