Walz receiving flack for supporting Bush on FISA
Tongues are wagging and keyboards are pounding on the left side of the blogosphere questioning Rep. Tim Walz's "yea" vote on the Protect America Act of 2007, which more or less legalizes all the illegal electronic surveillance stuff that's been going on since 9/11. (It's a little more complicated than that.)
The blogosphere is one thing, but now the heretofore solidly conservative Rochester Post-Bulletin minces no words in calling Walz to task for his vote.
To see the Post-Bulletin chastising a Democrat for supporting the president signals one of two things. Either the Post-Bulletin has taken a decidedly leftward tack in its editorial policy, or Walz actually did make the wrong decision. If you want to read the editorial, go here.

The WRONG vote that Walz made was not FISA related, but to adjourn for Summer recess.
First, we don't know what the Government was doing before, so our liberties were already in jeopardy.
Second, does anyone know what Signing Statement Bush issued when he signed this legislation? He's probably doing more than we think.
The mistake was to rush through a bill so quickly that debate may have actually only involved a few party leaders. Congress should have said "If we denounce the Iraqi Parliament for taking a month off because they did not get an Oil Law, we will not recess until this FISA question is resolved." That means that even Bush would have had to postpone his vacation.
I believe that Congress should have held out for Gonzales to resign to approve this legislation. Bush won't offer his resignation since he does not want to go through the confirmation process, but there is an easy way around that. Gonzales resigns during the Summer Recess, and Bush makes a Recess Appointment. It could have been worked out in the backrooms.
My prediction is that sometime in the next week, Bush will announce more Recess Appointments and they will include Dr. James Holsinger as Surgeon General. When that happens, Harry Reid will realize that he should have never allowed a summer break. The PB editorial is correct that any effort to rewrite this legislation will be vetoed by Bush, so its a waste of time to even discuss it.
It's laughable to think that Walz is pandering for the Conservative votes ... they will never vote for him. Walz isn't the problem, Reid and Pelosi are.
