A short note on the Minneapolis bridge collapse
No doubt the certain blogosphere chatterboxes will be busy speculating about blame for the I-35 bridge collapse in Minneapolis. We've already seen one such post, which implies that the Gov. Tim Pawlenty/Minnesota GOP stranglehold on state transportation dollars might be at least part of the cause.
While we don't agree with Mr. Pawlenty's policies on highway funding — we believe there should be more dollars for transportation financed by fuel taxes and user fees — to imply that the bridge failed due to political decisions without citing one shred of real evidence is a cheap shot indeed.
The reasons for the bridge collapse will be examined by numerous agencies, both state and federal. Only after the facts are in should we decide what went wrong. Responsible speculation may be OK, but accusation by innuendo is a bad game to play.

Thank you for taking the high road in this situation, Leigh. I've been reading and hearing all sorts of political finger pointing - typically from the left and amongst Democrats. DFL State Senator Steve Murphy indirectly implicates governor Pawlenty with his comments in the star tribune today and Democrat US Senator Murray has indirectly implicated President Bush with her comments today. And the Common Sense post to which you link is really disturbing.
Until the facts are in, the political hyperbole going on only serves to fan the anger rather than look for solutions.
So, thanks to you for taking a different stance. Your reservation of judgement is the exception and I applaud you for that.
