Anti-union ad is deceptive

by Joe Mayer

(Originally published in the Rochester Post-Bulletin, 3/2/2007)

A radio advertisement sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce reaches the height of deception as it infers that the Chamber is concerned with working for peoples' rights.

The ad insinuates that House Bill 800, "Employee Free Choice Act" to restore workers' freedom to form unions, would interfere with laborers' right to vote and their right to privacy. It goes on to say that workers shouldn't be subjected to coercion and intimidation by union bosses. Finally, it appeals to laborers to use the National Labor Relations Board, which ironically is now in [the] control of U.S. business.

The U.S. Chamber membership is well known for its intimidation of workers, its threats to fire or refuse promotions to union sympathizers, its attempts to overturn the National Labor Relations Act, and the use of physical force on workers' attempts for equal bargaining power.

To imply that U.S. Rep. Tim Walz, who met and spoke with the fired Holiday Inn Express workers, is working against them and all workers is the height of hypocrisy.

The US Chamber membership is well known for its intimidation of workers, et al? Where's your proof of that claim? Where are the broken windows, the threatened family members, the job place intimidation? Oh, that's how unions keep a grip on their members...nevermind.

House Bill 800 is a crock. It will put the fear in the union rank and file by removing anonymous voting. This will open up that old can of worms where the term 'union goon' comes from. House File 800 is all about union control and politics. 6 of the top 10 contribtors to political campaigns since 1989 are unions with AFSCME as the number 1 contributor. House Bill 800 is a direct payoff to the unions for the 2006 elections in order to solidify votes for the Democrat majority. If I were a union member, I would be very fearful of House Bill 800, because if I don't vote the way my union says AND they get to see my vote, my family, my property - not to mention my job - would be at risk. House File 800 is anti-freedom and anti-privacy and is nothing more than cozy relations between the Democrats and their union benefactors. Any reasonable person can see the danger in House Bill 800 - unless all you care about is having a Democrat majority and winning elections. Your opinion may as well have been 'I don't care whose rights get stomped on, as long as the Democrats remain in control, any law they pass is fine with me'.

Real nice philosophy there, Mr Mayer.
