State Sen. Dick Day (R-Owatonna) joined Lake Crystal school board member Mark Meyer today as the second Republican to declare his candidacy for Congress to represent Minnesota's 1st District. More at Minnesota Public Radio.

The Star-Tribune reported “Unseating an incumbent could take more than $1.5 million, and beginning an aggressive campaign after a spring 2008 endorsing convention would be impractical, Day said. He noted that he had raised $780,000 for his caucus last year, evidence of his fundraising skill.”
At $1.5 million, this will not be the citizens of the First District sending in their $50 donations … this will be corporations and wealthy individuals using issue advocacy groups to provide “communications experts”, TV/radio ads, mass mailings, and robo-calls. The message will be shaped to what they want the voters to think by manipulating the issues.
So, is there another underline story here?
How about finding a personality for fundraising purposes ?
If the Republicans want to keep pressure on Walz and attract funds, Day is an ideal candidate. So for the next year, he schmoozes contributors and then when the nominating convention happens, there are a number of other candidates for the party to select. They select a younger, highly Conservative candidate and Day concedes that that candidate would be great nominee, closes his campaign, and sends his warchest to the nominee.
This is a sad day.
I have elaborated on this subject in two commentaries in my blog.
Sad Day
Speculation
Here's my dilema: I liek Dick Day. In addition I have never heard anyone around me utter a bad word about the guy. Even my late father, who was totally ant-Bush thought Dick Day was a hellova good guy and politician.
In addition I've already heard some younger folks at the Panera in Rochester saying that they coulld vote for Dick Day.
Tim is going to have a bareknuckle fight on his hands if Dick Day enters. You can think of me as having my finger on the pulse of SE MN. If Dick Day Runs the smart money isn't on Walz at this time, as he doesn't carry the Bush suck up stigma that Gil had.
Tim better not look past this guy.
