New Lawmaker Introduces Smoking Ban Bill
Four months ago Prof. Kathy Sheran was teaching classes in the School of Nursing at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and running for the Minnesota State Senate. Today she is Sen. Kathy Sheran (D-Mankato) and one of the chief sponsors of the 2007 "Freedom to Breathe Act" (House version, Senate version).
In years past this legislation would have been considered next to futile, with the State House and the Governor's office controlled by the Republican Party. But this year is different. Both houses of the legislature are firmly in the hands of the DFL, and Gov. Pawlenty has said he will sign the smoking ban legislation.
Both Sheran and the man she replaced, former Sen. John Hottinger, appear on TPT's Almanac Friday night, Jan. 26, at 7:00 p.m. Rep. Steve Sviggum will be on hand to argue against the legislation. The show will be rebroadcast at other times over the weekend.
