What do Fairmont, Minnesota, and Chicago have in common?

They both support a Department of Peace
Fairmont backs peace department

FAIRMONT — Judi Poulson and her local peace group scored a coup Monday when the Fairmont City Council unanimously endorsed the concept of a U.S. Department of Peace and Non-Violence.

Only 16 other cities in the nation have taken the step of publicly backing the initiative. Those cities tend to be big and, in any honest assessment, liberal. They include Minneapolis, Cleveland, Detroit and Berkeley, Calif.

Likewise, backers of the bill, including sponsors Rep. Dennis Kucinich, an Ohio Democrat, and Sen. Mark Dayton of Minnesota, are known for their left-wing politics. The legislation has 75 co-sponsors in the U.S. House and two in the U.S. Senate, all Democrats.

City Council members Jim Smith and Harlan Gorath offered the local resolution. Council members made no comments before approving it. There was not anyone present in the audience to object.

Of interest is that Fairmont is hardly a hotbed of liberalism, voting consistently for GOP lawmakers.

But then "peace" and "conservatism" should not be opposing values.... Right?
