All Things Considered, November 3, 2006 · In Minnesota's 1st Congressional District, the race pits a once-safe Republican incumbent, Rep. Gil Gutknecht, against a National Guard veteran and high school teacher, Tim Walz.

Walz has made Iraq a centerpiece of his campaign, and as a 24-year member of the Minnesota National Guard, he delivers a authoritative critique of the war — and its Republican supporters.

The race falls in a district of independent-minded voters that has trended Republican in recent elections. But support for the war has been falling.
