Defending Major Gates
In a letter to the editor of the Mankato Free Press dated July 22, Major Walter Gates, currently serving in Iraq, questioned congressional candidate Tim Walz's military service. The letter read:
Numerous responders in letters to the Free Press (see below), including Mr. Walz himself, have replied — accurately — that Walz has never claimed to have served in either Afghanistan or Iraq but was assigned to serve in support in Italy. The question arises: Was Major Gates purposefully implying that Walz misled the public on this issue? Or was the Major himself misled by inaccurate press coverage, of which there has been some, claiming or implying that Walz served in the actual battleground theaters?
I would like to think the latter.
I have a great admiration for Major Gates and for all our men and women who have been assigned to fight a war in Iraq that itself is based on misinformation, that is monumentally wasteful, that is horribly destabilizing, and that ultimately will go down in history as one of this country's greatest blunders.
Personally, I look forward to the time when Major Gates and his fellow soldiers no longer have to play the pawns — many sacrificing their lives and futures — for an arrogant and corrupt administration, and can return home to their families and communities.

Letters on Walz's military record:
Back in February, from here at LSA Anaconda, Balad Air Base in Iraq, I sent an email to Tim Walz, who is running for Congress. Walz has failed to respond, so through this letter I'll ask him again.
I have read the information on his military career. It is impressive and has gained him significant support, to include Al Franken. It strongly suggests that he fought in Iraq or Afghanistan, but does not say which country. Because the information is not classified, Walz can tell the voters where he deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan and his BOG (boots on the ground) dates.
If Walz did not deploy downrange, he should say so.
Will he answer this time?
