A congressman who actually practices what he preaches

Rep. Tim Walz to return $4,130 pay raise to U.S. Treasury

Bluestem Prairie

A kind friend sent us this press release from the Walz campaign, in which he lives up to a campaign promise :
Mankato – Freshman Representative Tim Walz announced today that as part of his pledge to return fiscal responsibility to the Congress, he will return an anticipated 2008 pay raise to the U.S. Treasury. Members of Congress are scheduled to receive a 2008 Cost of Living Adjustment this month, which will raise their pay 2.5 percent. Unless the Congress votes to block the COLA increase as they did in 2007, Members’ annual salaries will increase by $4,130, from $165,200 to $169,300.
(I wonder how many other of our senators and representatives are planning to do the same.... — LP)

Walz’s donation may be new, but the vote is old. The Dems voted to accept the raise 145-83 with about half opposing being the Freshman; the Republicans voted to accept the raise 99 -98.
Jim Matheson (D-UT) has pushed this issue for years that increase should not be granted while the deficit is growing.
Paul Wellstone regularly donated his increase and I believe that Mark Dayton did not accept a salary.
I would propose that Congress with their high income, not receive a percent increase ($4000+) but instead a COL based on what the percent increase based on the poverty level. That would allow them to recover the inflation but not inflate the wage.
